Why I Love Being a Potter
In our fast-paced world, where instant gratification is the norm where we are bombarded with ‘to do’ lists, media, scrolling through screens, it's refreshing to step away from the chaos. Pottery offers the perfect escape. It demands focus, presence, and mindfulness—it's like a beautiful meditation.
Pottery encompasses so much more than just art and craft; it's a blend of science, engineering, and design. Sharing the skills I've learnt over the years with my students and watching their visions come to life is incredibly rewarding. Seeing their faces light up when their creations emerge from the kiln is an honour.
Even after more than 20 years as a potter (yes, I know I don't look old enough!), I still feel that Christmas morning excitement every time I open the kiln, eager to see the treasures inside. This feeling is especially strong when I'm testing new items or glazes.
I love that this humble material, clay, undergoes numerous transformations to become a lasting piece (as long as it doesn't get dropped). My fingerprints, vision, and creativity will endure long after I'm gone. Perhaps one day, an archaeologist will unearth my work, I hope they are impressed.
Take Care
